Featured Project:  Voxel8 Developer's Kit

(Industrial Design, UI/UX Design, Packaging & Branding)

Dubbed "The World's First 3d Electronics Printer" the Developer's kit was a 2 year project that involved heavy user research, machine design and extensive collaboration with an engineering team that yielded a compact yet highly modular and precise multi-material desktop 3D Printer capable of co-printing numerous substrate materials (such as plastic FDM processes) and active materials (Such as a highly conductive silver ink).

Juan did the industrial design for all the machine hardware, consumables and packaging, and also led the visual design of all software interfaces, including desktop based applications and embedded touch-screen based controls.

Awards & Recognitions

The Voxel8 Developers kit 3D printer has received numerous awards for its design and functionality. Upon Launch, it was named one of the 9 best ideas at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2015 by Fast Company. It received an Edison Gold award for manufacturing, an R&D 100 award, and Voxel8 was also named one of 2015's 50 smartest companies by the MIT Technology Review.

Magnetically held cartridges helped make the printer extremely modular and adaptable to different substrates and active materials. It also greatly enhanced it serviceability.

Unique Software

Designing the world's first desktop Multi-material 3D Printer had many challenges, one being the creation of a unique set of tools and control panels that helped operate the machine, as well as to prepare files and designs for multi-material slicing.

Collaborating with a highly skilled software development team, Juan led the visual UI/UX design of an embedded linux platform operated directly on the machine, as well as a web/based "Dashboard" application that helped import CAD designs and prepare them for processing and printing.

Peripherals & Packaging

Juan also designed an entire line of packaging for consumables and tools that complemented the machine and the company's branding, and protected the delicate and expensive equipment.
